2. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

2. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

When it came to designing our music video and our ancillary texts we knew that we wanted to try and appeal to a mass audience. The reason for this is that because we wanted to be able to recreate the success that out artist has had. I feel like by having a goal to appeal to a mass audience it made our final products look a lot more refined and professional in order to gain attention from our chosen target audience. All of our final products are shown below:

This is all 3 of our final products: Our music video, magazine advert and digipak.
Overall i think that they work well together and all fit into the genre of it all. When creating the Digipak and the Magazine advert i wanted to ensure that they would relate to our music video and the whole concept of it. In addition to this we made sure that the digipak and the magazine advert showed dark neutral colours and would reflect negative emotions as that was something that was reflected in our music video.

Both of our ancillary texts relate to one another as it was important that they would promote our artist and visually they weren't to different. I designed the Digipak first as i thought that this would be a good place to start and get the main part of our ancillary texts finished. I wanted to go for an autumnal theme and try to portray negative emotions through the images and the editing of it all. The reason for this was because i needed to show a reflection between the digipak and our music video and considering the style and genre of our music video i thought that this would work well as a concept. I have used the same image on both the magazine advert and the digipak as it is important that they are seen as a whole package and not individually. Whilst carrying out research into the digipak and magazine adverts of well known artists i could see that this is a common thing to do which would benefit our outcomes if they looked similar. This would also mean that we would be conforming to the typical conventions of real media texts. Our research helped us create something that was a impression of the music industry.

Furthermore, by using the same background, image and font it would mean that our work would still look consistent and give our group a image in which to go by. This allows our argot audience to recognise us as a group based on the image that we have created. This is something that is used well within the music industry and would help us appeal to that mass audience.

I think the main thing that ties our ancillary products together is the fact that we have used a block colour in the image, in which only part of it contains colour. this ties in well with our autumnal theme that we are going for. The reason for using dark colours is because when realising that we wanted to represent negative emotion within our music video they are usually symbolised through dark colours therefore we wanted this to be shown in our final products to create that negativity and the emotions that most teenagers go through at some stage of their life.

The thing that i like the most it the background for the text. I created this by getting a grey textured background of google and then in photoshop using the lasso tool i drew a ragged outline then copied and pasted that onto my image. I think that this looks effective and fits in with the grayscale theme. I used the opacity tool to then reduce the colour. This was so that the background colour was not a block colour. This is something that i haven't seen in most digipaks that have been created by other artist, therefore it means that our digipak is unique and individual allowing our style to be shown through.

A disadvantage of our digipak however is the fact that when receiving our audience feedback some felt that the overall design was to dark and if they saw it in a store that would think of a different style of music to what ours is. However i think that if we was to add more colour into the overall design then this would look positive and give of the wrong type of emotions that we are trying to portray.

background

Another element of our music video that i believe has become a success would be our diverse range in background. This is something that i have noticed is common in music videos. As you can see that we have used various backgrounds within our music video. This is because we felt that if we used a range of locations and backgrounds then it would keep the individuals more entertained and interested in our music video.

One thing that i did notice in artists music videos was the fact that the artist could be featured in the same location but different backgrounds. This was something that we done in our music video. When filming we would go to a location but film in various spots therefore we were still being different and changing the background. This benefitted us in the sense that we were able to include variety in our music video and were able to film more the one part of our music video in the same location, this proved to be easier for us as we didn't necessarily have the mosey to travel further a field and be more adventurous. I do think that this has worked in our favour.

Another thing that i feel has worked well with our background was the weather. On the days that we would film the weather was quite dreary and dark. This worked out to be quite beneficial given the atmosphere that we were trying to show in our music video. If the weather had been nice then i feel like the atmosphere for the video would have been different and would have caused confusion when watching the music video as the lighting and the weather would have made the video seem more positive then we would have wanted.

On one the days that we did film it was raining which i think helped with the lighting and the effect if the music video. On that day also we had found that it had been quite windy, and we found that when we were filming the wind hit just as a high note was approaching. This turned out to be really beneficial for us as it created the effect of having a fan and blowing the individuals hair to create that wind-swepped look. This is something that i think looks really professional and helps our product look apart of the music industry and help to appeal to that mass audience.

Lip syncing

Lip syncing proved to be quite easy for our group as we had chosen a song that we already knew and that i already knew all the words to so when it came to performing it we didn't need to learn any additional words. When it came to editing we did find it quite difficult to get the lip syncing dead on perfect and matching the original track.

However i do think that there is a slight disadvantage to our music video when it comes to lip syncing. In some scenes that we shot i noticed that the lip syncing could have been refined and improved as personally i feel that there is a shot were the lip syncing looks slightly out of place but luckily it isn't dramatically noticeable.

A reason for this could be down to the quality of the cameras that we used as i feel that although the cameras we of a good standard the quality of that particular scene wasn't the best. Another additional factor to this could be the weather as it was raining and we had no cover for the camera therefore i feel like this has effected to whole quality of the scene.

Overall i think that all of my elements of my main product and my ancillary texts have been a success and all work well together to help appeal to that mass audience that we are aiming for. I think that the digipak and the magazine poster reflect the main product and the overall feel of it. I feel that by creating these pieces of texts we have created an overall image for our artist which will be easy recognisable for our audience.

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The first way in which our media product challenged the forms and conventions of a real media product is through the use of us not using a storyline to represent and show our music video. As a group we decided that the best way to fully show our skill and capability in creating a music video would just be through our range of shots and editing skills. When filming we decided not to include a storyline as we thought that it would take away the attention of the awry of skill that we have put into our music video. This is known within real music videos but isn't as common as using a story line. An example of a music video that doesn't include a storyline is Jess Glyne- take me home. The music video shows a range of shots and could potentially go against some of the typical conventions of a music video. Although it hasn't got a story line the song and the music video has still been successful. The music video contains a lot of close up shots which i think helps the audience to interact and gain a feel of the emotion that is being portrayed within the music video.

Within our own music video we included a range of shots that include different locations and backgrounds. Our target audience is aged 13-18, therefore we wanted to show a range of emotion within our music video as we knew that some of the emotion that we would show our target audience would be able to relate. By doing this we knew that it would also make our target audience feel more involved in our music video and draw more attention to it. Certain artist that we believe show this are people like Adele and Taylor Swift who show certain emotion through the use of their music video and the shots that they use. In some of the videos that they use there is no story line. In conclusion this is one example of how we have conformed to the conventions of real media products.

Location:

Another example of a convention that we used was the use of location. When first starting this project we done research into the music videos that artists had to create and one thing that i noticed was that a variety of locations were used within the duration of the music video. Therefore when creating our music video we decided to use different locations. We done this to keep the audience interested and engaged whilst watching our music video. In total we used 4 different locations. By using different locations it would ensure that our target audience would not get tired of watching the same locations in repetition so by including different shots of different location it would keep them more interested in the music video. I think that by us doing this it has been effective and improved the quality of our music video.

Recurring scenes:

Another convention that we noticed took place in music videos was scenes that were repeated more then once in a music video. When it came to filming the music video we found that it was easier to film the whole of the music video in one place within the different locations, then when it came to editing it we were able to use the footage from different scenes and repeat them. When getting feedback on our music video we found that one thing that was said was that the target audience liked the way that scenes had been used more then once within the film as they felt that if this wasn't done then it would make watching the video quite boring as there is no creativity in it. By doing this also i feel like it has made our music video look more professional and effective.

Effects:

One thing that i noticed whilst doing my research for my project that not a lot of artist used many effects in the sense of changing the colour of the scene and using a split screen. The reason as to why we did add a split screen was because we thought that it would enhance the skill that would be shown in the final product. This would be something that shows how we have challenged the conventions of real media products. I do think however that it was a good thing that we added in these effects due to the fact that i think if the final product didn't contain anything then it would be quite boring to watch.

Digipak:

When creating our digipak we conformed to the typical conventions of how a digipak is structured. When looking at digipaks that had been created by other artists we noticed that on the front they would always include an image of the artist, which would help the audience know who is featured in the band. We also added a song list on the back, this was something that we found to be common in digipaks. In addition we didn't want our digipak to look the same as all of the other artists that produce a digipak, so we decided to be slightly different and challenged  the  concept of a digipak and how they look, as we decided to only put part of our digipak in colour to show originality and make the final product stand out.

Overall i think that we have conformed and challenged the forms and conventions of real media products. I think that this shows initiative and shows that in some areas we are trying to be different in order to stand out and attract the attention of our target audience and appeal to the things that they like and are interested in.

final music video

This is our final music video :

editing our music video

Here are some shots of the editing process of our music video:

This is a shot of us adding an effect onto our music video. The reason for doing this is to show that we are capable of using a range of editing techniques and the skills that we are able to use. From looking at the effects we can see that there is several to choose from. When it came to choosing an effect we went through several to try and find out which one was bet for our music video. One of the options was the old school effect as we thought that it didn't look to artificial and added a nice soft touch to video, but when looking at it we didn't think that it was completely suite to our music video based on the genre of our film
In the end we decided to go for sepia as we think that it was best suited  for this chosen clip.
We did slightly dull down the colour based on the fact that we thought the full effect was to harsh but instead of changing the clip we decided to keep it on this. The timing of filming this clip worked out well as when miming a high note the wind created a more professional look on the clip. This was partly the reason also we thought the clip was best suited for the effect of this clip. This filter also was something that i had scene in other music videos so i knew that this would fit into a convention of a music video.
Here shows a range of shots that we took for some of our clips in the music video. The reason for this particular background in the array of colours that ares on the walls that has been created by the leaves. Due to the time of year the leaves weren't as bright, but i think that this has worked to our advantage based on the theme and the overall genre of our music video and the theme that is shown though out the music video.

Lastly this is a part of the iMovie that we are able to use in order to add certain effects such as speeding up a clip or slowing it down and reversing it. This is something that we added into our music video and has found the be quite effective and shows a range of skills.

final magazine advert

This is our final magazine cover.

From looking at it you can see that we have decided to keep the same theme as our digipak. This is because we all wanted it to tie in with the genre of our music video. We have used different fonts in  which some of them are used in lour digipak. I think that this helps to show a clear link between the two products.

Due to the colour of our background it was kind of hard getting the right colour of writing. Although i think that the white looks professional and stands out i do think that  because parts of our background are lighter then others it is slightly hard to read

Overall i do think that our final product looks professional and effective and shows a wide range of skills and creativity.

Explaining the Digipak

This is the front cover of my digipak. As you can see we have gone for a bold block of colour just on the model. this is because we wanted apart of the digipak to stand out and to draw the attention of viewers. when looking at other digipaks from other artist we could see that this wasn't really a popular thing and not many people had recreated it so by doing this it has allowed us to be different and do something that isn't really scene.

For the back of our digipak we have tried to keep a running theme in by having the same greyscale background  for the names of the songs and for the title of the CD. in the background of this image we decided not to put the model in colour because we thought that it would slightly clash with the front cover and wee didn't want it to be too much and overpower the overall image and look of our digipak.

This is the inside of our digipak. Again we decided to use the light grey background to continue with the pattern of our digipak. I thought that it was best to add colour to this, otherwise i think that the inside would have been to dark and although it kind of fits in with the theme of our music video i do think that some colour ended to be added otherwise it could have been to dark as an overall final product.

Lastly this is the CD holder part of our digipak.  When creating this i thought that it would be easy to do by getting a template of the internet and creating it like that, but this wasn't the case. I ended up having to create this by using photoshop and various tools to create the CD holder. The part that i found most difficult where the indentations that you get in a digipak. When looking at them closely they are not all 100% identical but i do think that they fit in with the digipak.

Overall i am pleased with our final digipak as i think that it is effective and fits in with the overall theme of our music video. I do think that it looks professional and shows originality as it doesn't look like a typical digipak. I think this is what will make it stand out
