1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The first way in which our media product challenged the forms and conventions of a real media product is through the use of us not using a storyline to represent and show our music video. As a group we decided that the best way to fully show our skill and capability in creating a music video would just be through our range of shots and editing skills. When filming we decided not to include a storyline as we thought that it would take away the attention of the awry of skill that we have put into our music video. This is known within real music videos but isn't as common as using a story line. An example of a music video that doesn't include a storyline is Jess Glyne- take me home. The music video shows a range of shots and could potentially go against some of the typical conventions of a music video. Although it hasn't got a story line the song and the music video has still been successful. The music video contains a lot of close up shots which i think helps the audience to interact and gain a feel of the emotion that is being portrayed within the music video.

Within our own music video we included a range of shots that include different locations and backgrounds. Our target audience is aged 13-18, therefore we wanted to show a range of emotion within our music video as we knew that some of the emotion that we would show our target audience would be able to relate. By doing this we knew that it would also make our target audience feel more involved in our music video and draw more attention to it. Certain artist that we believe show this are people like Adele and Taylor Swift who show certain emotion through the use of their music video and the shots that they use. In some of the videos that they use there is no story line. In conclusion this is one example of how we have conformed to the conventions of real media products.

Location:

Another example of a convention that we used was the use of location. When first starting this project we done research into the music videos that artists had to create and one thing that i noticed was that a variety of locations were used within the duration of the music video. Therefore when creating our music video we decided to use different locations. We done this to keep the audience interested and engaged whilst watching our music video. In total we used 4 different locations. By using different locations it would ensure that our target audience would not get tired of watching the same locations in repetition so by including different shots of different location it would keep them more interested in the music video. I think that by us doing this it has been effective and improved the quality of our music video.

Recurring scenes:

Another convention that we noticed took place in music videos was scenes that were repeated more then once in a music video. When it came to filming the music video we found that it was easier to film the whole of the music video in one place within the different locations, then when it came to editing it we were able to use the footage from different scenes and repeat them. When getting feedback on our music video we found that one thing that was said was that the target audience liked the way that scenes had been used more then once within the film as they felt that if this wasn't done then it would make watching the video quite boring as there is no creativity in it. By doing this also i feel like it has made our music video look more professional and effective.

Effects:

One thing that i noticed whilst doing my research for my project that not a lot of artist used many effects in the sense of changing the colour of the scene and using a split screen. The reason as to why we did add a split screen was because we thought that it would enhance the skill that would be shown in the final product. This would be something that shows how we have challenged the conventions of real media products. I do think however that it was a good thing that we added in these effects due to the fact that i think if the final product didn't contain anything then it would be quite boring to watch.

Digipak:

When creating our digipak we conformed to the typical conventions of how a digipak is structured. When looking at digipaks that had been created by other artists we noticed that on the front they would always include an image of the artist, which would help the audience know who is featured in the band. We also added a song list on the back, this was something that we found to be common in digipaks. In addition we didn't want our digipak to look the same as all of the other artists that produce a digipak, so we decided to be slightly different and challenged  the  concept of a digipak and how they look, as we decided to only put part of our digipak in colour to show originality and make the final product stand out.

Overall i think that we have conformed and challenged the forms and conventions of real media products. I think that this shows initiative and shows that in some areas we are trying to be different in order to stand out and attract the attention of our target audience and appeal to the things that they like and are interested in.
